Objectives

The objectives of the program are to improve or develop:
  • knowledge and skills essential for a career in academic family medicine;
  • teaching skills for use in academic clinical teaching units or in community practices;
  • basic research skills in both quantitative or qualitative research methodologies;
  • and administrative and leadership skills essential to working within the discipline and to the development of the discipline of family medicine.

The program is offered to family physicians of exceptional capability who:
  • may be planning a future career in academic family medicine;
  • or are junior, mid career, or senior faculty in academic departments of family medicine, possibly on sabbatical, who wish to advance their teaching, research, and administrative skills; or
  • are part of a faculty development program within the Department of Family Medicine at UWO; and
  • to community family physicians who wish to make teaching and/or research part of their private community practice of family medicine

Evidence that these objectives are being met can be found in:
  • the descriptions of academic career successes of the graduates;
  • the emulation of the program in other academic centres around the world (Toronto, Canada; Dundee, Scotland; Australia, and New Zealand); and
  • from the feedback the program received in the independent assessment conducted by the Ivey Business School Review of 1994
