Rural - Goderich Program Curriculum

Features of our Rural – Goderich Program

The curriculum in Goderich is a hybrid curriculum that combines a rotation-based curriculum in PGY1 and a horizontal curriculum in PGY2. This design is to allow residents to optimally experience being a family physician in their PGY2 year where he/she will comprehensively care for his/her own practice while allowing for continued enrichment experiences via longitudinal electives. Residents are required to live in Goderich in their PGY2 year.

-Pediatric Clinical Teaching Unit in Windsor*
Obstetrics/Gynecology 4 weeks Default rotation:
-Owen Sound Hospital* 
General Surgery 4 weeks Choices (depending on availability):
-St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital*
-Stratford General Hospital* or Woodstock*
-Chatham-Kent Health Alliance* or Bluewater Health-Sarnia*
-Owen Sound Hospital* or Windsor*
Medicine 4 weeks Default rotation:
- Alexandra Marine and General Hospital - Goderich*
Medicine - Geriatrics 4 weeks Choices:
-London Health Sciences Centre (NorthEnd Consults or Acute Care of the Elderly unit)
-Parkwood Hospital
-London Long-term Care Rotation
Medicine - selective 4 weeks ICU at Bluewater Health in Sarnia*
ICU in Windsor*
Palliative Care 4 weeks Choices:
-Kitchener, Sarnia, Windsor, or Woodstock
-Resident Choice (resident to arrange at a teaching hospital outside of Southwestern Ontario, eg. ROMP, ERMEP, NOSM, Toronto)

PGY2 Year
Rotation Duration Location / Notes
Family Medicine  11 or 12 months (depending if family medicine elective is taken) Maitland Valley Medical Centre, Goderich
-minimum of 6 half-days per week spent in practice-based activities (including protected academic time of 1 half-day)
-Practice-based activities include:
-office care
-inpatient care: acute, chronic, surgical,
palliative, ICU, pediatrics
-nursing home
-emergency room shifts
-house calls
-intrapartum obstetrics (30-60 deliveries per year)
FM – elective 4 weeks (optional) -Resident’s choice
Longitudinal electives 11 or 12 months (depending if family medicine elective is taken) -Maximum of 4 half-days per week may be spent with allied health professionals, family physicians with special interests or focused practices, or specialists
-Choices of longitudinal electives will need to be approved by family medicine preceptor

 

Potential choices in Goderich include:
-Cardiac rehabilitation program
-psychologist
-pharmacist
-dietician
-nurse practitioner
-diabetic nurse educator
-OR assisting
-GP anesthesia
-Visiting pediatrician, pediatric and adult respirology, ENT, endocrinology, orthopedic, dermatology
-Local general surgeon, internal medicine with cardiology focus, OB/GYN, radiologist
-Dialysis unit All other experiences available in the rest of the residency program will be available: London, Windsor, St. Thomas, Stratford, Chatham, Owen Sound

Other mandatory requirements for completion of residency
  • Residency project
    • Choices: clinical audit, case report, clinical research project, comprehensive literature review, major essay, other (requires approval from family medicine preceptor)
    • Resident will present project either as a poster or presentation

  • Academic program
    • Every Wednesday afternoon (on or off-service) will be protected for completion of the academic program
    • Must complete a minimum number of credits; minimum credit requirements exist for certain topics to ensure full coverage of topics to be learned
    • Credits can be accumulated via self-directed learning or attending pre-scheduled teaching sessions on Wednesday afternoons
    • Activities are logged online in order to receive credits
    • Participation in Behavioural Medicine and Ethics Curriculum

  • Procedures and obstetrics delivery log
    • Allows residents to track their own learning
    • Helps accomplish delivery targets
