Rural - Hanover Program Curriculum

Features of our Rural – Hanover Program

The curriculum in Hanover is designed to prepare residents for comprehensive family practice in a rural setting.

The first year aims to develop solid foundations in various areas of medicine and surgery while providing a solid experience in family medicine. The second year builds on this by placing the resident in the family practice the majority of the time to facilitate continuity of care and experience being a family physician for a group of patients. It is then complimented by elective blocks to allow the resident to further refine his/her training.

Pediatrics	4 weeks	Choices (depending on availability): -Community Pediatrics in Chatham* -Community Pediatrics in Point Edward or Bluewater Health-Sarnia* -Pediatric Clinical Teaching Unit in Windsor*
Obstetrics/Gynecology	4 weeks	Default rotation: -Windsor*
General Surgery	4 weeks	Choices (depending on availability): -St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital* -Stratford General Hospital* or Woodstock* -Chatham-Kent Health Alliance* or Bluewater Health-Sarnia* -Owen Sound Hospital* or Windsor*
Medicine	4 weeks	Default rotation: -Chatham-Kent Health Alliance* or Bluewater Health-Sarnia*
Medicine - Geriatrics	4 weeks	Choices: -London Health Sciences Centre (NorthEnd Consults or Acute Care of the Elderly unit) -Parkwood Hospital -London Long-term Care Rotation
Medicine - selective	4 weeks	ICU at Bluewater Health in Sarnia* ICU in Windsor*
Palliative Care	4 weeks	Choices: -Kitchener, Sarnia, Windsor, or Woodstock -Resident Choice (resident to arrange at a teaching hospital outside of Southwestern Ontario, eg. ROMP, ERMEP, NOSM, Toronto)

Other mandatory requirements for completion of residency

Residency project

Choices: clinical audit, case report, clinical research project, comprehensive literature review, major essay, other (requires approval from family medicine preceptor)
Resident will present project either as a poster or presentation

Academic program

Every Wednesday afternoon (on or off-service) will be protected for completion of the academic program
Must complete a minimum number of credits; minimum credit requirements exist for certain topics to ensure full coverage of topics to be learned
Credits can be accumulated via self-directed learning or attending pre-scheduled teaching sessions on Wednesday afternoons
Activities are logged online in order to receive credits
Participation in Behavioural Medicine and Ethics Curriculum
