Victoria Family Medical Centre

TRAINING SITE/PRACTICE DESCRIPTION

Victoria Family Medical Centre, LondonFirst established at Victoria Hospital in 1970, the Victoria Family Medical Centre (VFMC)is affiliated with the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and The University of Western Ontario (UWO). Victoria Family Medical Centre has four clinical teaching teams led by experienced family physicians who are faculty members at UWO. Clinical care at the centre is team based with input from family practice nursing staff, social work, mental health team and a public health nurse. Family medicine residents training at Victoria Family Medical Centre will gain experience in a wide spectrum of activities in family medicine including obstetrical and infant care, acute hospital medicine, nursing home visits, house calls, community agencies, chronic hospital care and palliative care. Residents will experience continuity with a family medical practice over the 2 year residency program.
VFMC is a family health organization and part of the Thames Valley Family Health Team.

VFMC has been located for over 40 years in an area of London whose population is enriched by cultural and ethnic diversity, but not socio-economic advantage.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The present building was erected in 1993 and was purpose-built to train medical students and residents in the patient-centred approach to primary care. Victoria Family Medical Centre prides itself on providing academic family medicine services with a community focus. In addition to a wide variety of formal teaching by clinical faculty, including didactic presentations, case conferences, critical appraisal, and problem-based small group learning, residents benefit from an informal teaching setting with their readily available preceptors.

There is an active centre-wide research committee that supports resident projects and resident research. The centre also participates in clinical trials and collaborative projects with researchers from the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine and from other UWO departments.

    • Teaching every Wednesday morning
  • Mental health care: Residents may participate in care concurrently with psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse clinician
