Welcome to the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at Western University was established in April of 2001 by undergraduate medical students to enhance their exposure to family medicine as a medical specialty.

Goals of FMIG

The specific goals of FMIG include:

to foster an interest in family medicine as a career
to provide exposure to various aspects of family medicine: clinical, academic, financial and lifestyle
to familiarize undergraduate medical students at Western to its family medicine residency program
to engage undergraduate medical students at Western in family medicine related activities: conferences, rounds, seminars, research
to promote friendships and working relationships between staff physicians, researchers, residents and undergraduate medical students

Membership:

Anyone with an interest in family medicine is welcome. Meetings are open to everybody as long as the FMIG student organizers are notified. The FMIG student organizers can be reached at fmig@schulich.uwo.ca

History of the FMIG

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at The University of Western Ontario (UWO) was established in April of 2001 by undergraduate medical students to enhance their exposure to family medicine as a medical specialty. Besides undergraduate medical students, its membership includes staff family physicians, primary care researchers and family medicine residents.

The first meeting of FMIG took place on May 16, 2001 in the Medical Sciences Building. An enlightening discussion about primary care reform was held between expert guest speakers and a group of enthusiastic participants. Response from undergraduate medical students was tremendous and great interest was expressed for FMIG and future meetings, which provided the fuel that help launch FMIG to a greater height.
